Using Flikr

Wow - this is so late... so late....
Sorry Sue.

My group got to a slow start.... Our hero of the group was Kim S. She was always so "on it" in our group and worked hard to organize us and just get us going. I admit I was late to join in but a while there I thought it was just going to be an assignment done by Kim and I. We were eventually joined by our team Amrit and Jason and they were there to support and pick up the loose peices that Kim and I didn't have complete yet. We worked as a team in the end - but I feel that some of us did carry the project and others just chimed in with simple tasks. This was due to the lateness of some of our group joining the project.

Flickr was pretty cool to learn about. I enjoyed having a challenge of trying to learn a new tool and to design a course that will work from the learner's perspective. I appreciated the challenge and I liked that Kim picked our tool. Flickr wasn't what I would have picked and having another person set the stage for us was good and enriched the learning for us. Also I was so glad to be working with others to check my work to give insight and to keep me on track. I so do believe that collaboration is the best! sometimes not always the realistic answer, but it is the best!

Over and out... lips are above the waterline...

Moodle Learning theory activity

Geesh... I thought I was going to sail through this one... boy was I wrong.

I worked with moodle in the past and I got really hung up on actually getting it to work for me. I tried and tried bit by bit, but couldn't get anything to load into my sandbox area. I knew I had to get going on my ideas and not challenge the technology so I ended up writing about what I would do in the wiki. Sad... I know... sad... I did really want to accomplish using Moodle as an LMS and launching something. As some of the vendors that I work with use Moodle on an on-going basis I do really want to get a handle on this technology. In my last course the 4150 I did get pretty good at navigating around, but building inside just kind of stumped me this time around. I think if I had a few hours to dedicate to learning the technology outright, then I would have been more successful. I found a website to use of the generational videos that my company owns. Everything is locked down pretty tight due to copyright, so this information wouldn't be easily available on You tube for me to use with my learners... but having the students read, make notes and provide a forum post does ensure that they read the material and digest it. then reading through others answers and providing a summary of what they have taken away from this lesson is good learning.

I went back and forth on my instructions as I know I am not as clear as I should be sometimes, and actually doing the marking rubric exercise at the end made my course easier to understand. Thank goodness for the marking rubric.... my poor learners!

I will use this outline as I move forward to ensure that I have dotted my "i's" and crossed my "t's"
Thanks for the opportunity... this one was a good challenge for me

Multimedia Assignment thoughts

Well it is a few days late past our due date for the multi media assignment.

My entire team came through and as we aren't as communicative a group as the group I was with in 4150 - I do like that we have a chance to bounce ideas off of each other. Looking at everyone else's submission I now am rethinking my low tech ways... although I liked the contrast and that it may have been less intimidating for my learners to use paper and simple writing to express my lesson. The other submissions were much more polished and I think I should have gone this route too. But all in all I am proud that:
1) I put my submission inside a blog
2) that the idea kind of worked and
3) that I had a review puzzle exercise to add.

I am a bit sad as my laptop had some issues and the sound quality for my recording were not at all good.... but - I will keep on and try again. I like the "low tech" and "high tech" mix with the images of simple things done inside a move and then inside a blog. But I think I will change it up moving forward. This was a great learning experience and I appreciate the opportunity to try things out. All of the media resources to help out have been great.

A few worries

I am going to use my blog to help think things through.

My project that is due May 29th is going to be done in windows media with still photos run together to make a mini movie. There is audio that I can use witin Windows media.

I am going to take pictures of peices of paper to make up an image ( much like movie making or claymation if you will) that are very low tech. I hope to house this movie on a blog type format like this and then have a puzzle review imbedded to review the lesson for evaulation of the learner.

....phew... there now... that I have written it all down I feel better.

I know my objective
I know my media
I just need to finish it up and DO IT... go Leona go....
Sorry Sue - down to the wire as usual but it makes me feel better to write it all out.

Suddenly a F2F course has just been axed! the hire ups have decided they can't fly in anymore students... they aren't paying for a location. Make it on-line Leona and make it work or else....

"Yikes!".... says our Super Learning Specialist Leona under her breath... "gulp".... "no problem" she says with fake excitement in the board room... "you're gonna love it!"... and how much time do I have? oh great! Our fearless super hero runs from the boardroom, with her red folder grasped confidently under her arm...

This is getting a little bit to be the norm around my world. For example of a F2F course that I would have to move from a F2F format to entirely on-line would be our entire third level of leadership training. The main obstacle that I would have with moving this entire 60 hour program on -line would be the effectiveness for or learners. without being F2F the networking and social aspect of the program would be gone. This is important in our world as knowing each other and shaking hands on deals still exists. As well retention of the Learning Objectives would worry me along the way. If it was designed with time for reflection and proper activities for this reflection based on the objectives and the subject matter then it would work out okay. I just have to design correctly to check in with the learners frequently and to assess how they are doing.

Another thing I worry about is if the learners can stick with an on-line format and have the gumption to stick with it and complete it. I think marketing of the desired outcome for them and what completing this program may lead to, could help with this. marketing within the course iteself or having them complete a research topic together from previous grads or mentors could help.

Lips above the water line

I currently do read quite a few blogs.

I like blogs and to set up RSS feeds to them as I find they deliver timely information once a month or once a week right into my in-box. Then I can catch up without having to block a time to do it. The blog postings remind me to read them.

I currently have some e-learning ones hooked up and also some environmental blogs hooked up to scare myself a little each month. I also find that being hooked up to some creativity blogs help me in the business world as you tend to loose that creativity when you are designing. So having a well-timed blog hit your mailbox to generate ideas is wonder.

It feels great to have my own blog. Now I just need to remember to visit it and update it. It is like journalling for me and I know I should do it... I know I need to do it... but I need to make it a habit and get into the habit of doing it. With kids, school, work and our business I don't take enough "me" time and having a blog will help me get some "me" time and reflection time to see what I have learned in my day to day world and help me be a better instructor

I could use a blog with my students to help with collaboration between them as they move through their programs together. They can learn from each other and make comments about each others journey. Currently I run a group of leaders that start out on a program together and then go out into the field for 10 weeks. During this 10 week timeframe a blog would help them - journal - relfect and stay in touch with each other.

As many students have complained that 10 weeks is hard to do and they feel lonely being away from their "class" Blogging would help them feel connected.
